#6 PR Department or Firm?

Posted on: March 5, 2010

Is it more beneficial for a new PR practitioner to begin their career in a PR department or a PR firm? It is definitely more beneficial to begin in a PR department for a certain company than to begin in a PR firm. If you work in a PR firm, yes you will be surrounded by many other PR associates and will probably be able to readily have some one available to “show you the ropes,” but there are much more disadvantages to working at a firm than there are advantages. If you work with one company in their PR department, it’s a lot more close-knit and you will be able to become more familiar with the company and be able to know the ins and outs of said company so you are more knowledgeable in they ways of handling certain situations. Working for the PR department in a company also makes it more likely for you to be included in the decisions of policy issue and public attitudes. Working in a company department will definitely have you more busy than in a firm and you will be running around wuite a bit more, but you’ll have more authority and power. You will be in charge of upholding the public’s view of the company and since you are a part of the company you will see things everyday which will make it easier for you to maneuver through a bad situation or emphasize a good one. Definitely look for a career in a PR department before you go searching for PR firms. You don’t want to get lost in the sea of  PR agents.
